When you think of European travel, countries like Italy, France, or Spain probably come to mind first. But after spending ten days exploring Albania, I can confidently say it is one of the most underrated destinations in Europe.
My journey started in Sarandë, a charming coastal town where I arrived by ferry from Corfu. I spent a few days soaking in the relaxed vibe, walking along the waterfront, and enjoying some of the freshest seafood I have ever had. Sarandë’s calm atmosphere set the tone for what would become an unforgettable trip.
From there, I rented a car and drove along the famous Albanian Riviera. The coastal road is absolutely breathtaking, winding between dramatic mountain cliffs and turquoise beaches. Every turn seemed to offer a better view than the last, and it was hard not to stop every few kilometers just to take it all in.
After the coastline, I made my way inland to the historic city of Berat, known as the “City of a Thousand Windows.” Exploring the ancient castle, walking through cobblestone streets, and learning about the town’s rich history gave me a deeper appreciation for Albania’s cultural depth.
I also spent time between Tirana and Durrës, the two largest cities in the country. Tirana was buzzing with energy, colorful buildings, and a growing cafe culture, while Durrës offered a nice mix of history and beach life. Both cities showed a side of Albania that felt fresh, dynamic, and surprisingly modern.
Before wrapping up my trip, I visited Shkodër, a northern city with a rich history and a laid-back vibe. It was the perfect jumping-off point for my next adventure: a road trip around Montenegro. While Montenegro was beautiful in its own right, Albania left a different kind of mark on me.
What makes Albania truly special is not just the stunning scenery or the historic towns. It is the combination of nature, history, delicious food, and, most importantly, the warmth and hospitality of its people. Despite having so much to offer, Albania is still off the radar for many travelers, which means fewer crowds and a more authentic experience.
If you are looking for a European destination that is full of beauty, culture, and genuine hospitality, Albania should be at the top of your list.
